Since McVie’s death in November 2022, Nicks believes Fleetwood Mac is no longer active:
“Without Christine, no can do. There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”
Fleetwood Mac managed without the late keyboardist from 1998 to 2014, but it put more pressure on Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Despite their truce in 2023 after Buckingham’s 2018 exit, Nicks says it wouldn’t lead to a final tour. The singer referred to Buckingham’s emergency open heart surgery in 2019 and said:
“Even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he’s had some health problems. It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of touring that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go out for a year and half. It’s so demanding.”
McVie’s passing has cast doubt on Fleetwood Mac’s future. Guitarist Mike Campbell, who replaced Lindsey Buckingham for the 2018-2019 tour, also previously expressed doubts about the band reuniting for another tour:
“I don’t think they are going to do it again. I don’t really see it because Christine [McVie] is gone now, and Stevie [Nicks] is really busy. So, I have my doubts that they would crank that up again.”
“I don’t really see that ship leaving the port again. But if they asked me, and my time was open, I would certainly do it because I love the people, and their songs are really good.”
Last year, Stevie honored McVie at a concert and thanked Taylor Swift for a song that captured her feelings after McVie’s passing. She spoke emotionally about their friendship and how the song reflected her sadness and loneliness without McVie.
