Just when you thought craft beer trends had peaked with weird “beer smoothies” that might cost you your man card, Oregon brewers and marketers said hold my beer because apparently that wasn’t odd enough.
Breakside Brewery in Portland has teamed up with Columbia Sportswear to brew a limited-edition beer dubbed “Nature Calls” that literally includes bear poop in the brewing process... yep, actual black bear droppings collected from the wild have been infused into the water used to make this lager.
Despite how gross it sounds, the companies insist the beer is safe and drinkable, with added honey and huckleberry flavors to balance the wild twist. The stunt is aimed at grabbing attention ahead of the Super Bowl Players Tailgate event, where it will be served alongside at Breakside’s Oregon taprooms, and it reflects a growing trend in craft brewing to shock and delight drinkers in equal measure.
Whether you’re curious enough to try it or just want to laugh at how far beer innovation has gone since smoothie beers, this is one trend you’ll be talking about long after the first sip, if you dare.
