Missouri Judge Removed for Running Court in Elvis Wig and Shades

A judge from St. Charles County in Missouri, identified as Matthew Thornhill, has agreed to resign after a disciplinary panel found he frequently presided over court in an Elvis Presley-themed wig and aviator sunglasses, played Elvis music during proceedings, and made the King of Rock and Roll several references in his courtroom. The commission also cited separate misconduct, including political campaigning and providing a character reference in an adoption case, actions both concluded compromised the dignity and impartiality expected of a judge.

As part of his exit agreement, Thornhill accepted a six-month unpaid suspension and committed to resigning without re-election, effectively barring him from holding any future judicial office. In a written response, he acknowledged that his attempts at adding levity to court had “affected the integrity and solemnity” of judicial proceedings, underscoring how his antics ultimately crossed professional boundaries.
