Roger Taylor Says Queen Is "Too F---ing Popular" To Get Positive Reviews

76th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Press Room

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody film fetched record box office earnings for a music biopic last year, but the more than $1 billion in earnings didn't come without its share of criticism.

The Freddie Mercury biopic was maligned in the press for being overly safe, too liberal with the band's history and for steering clear of Mercury's battle with AIDS, among other issues.

Even victories for the film at the Golden Globes and then again at the Academy Awards didn't silence critics.

Drummer Roger Taylor says he doesn't take the blowback too seriously, noting that it comes with the territory being one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

"The trouble with us is we're too f---ing popular, and a lot of the media just hate that," Taylor told Planet Rock in a new interview.

Queen guitarist Brian May has repeatedly fired back at the press for its negative coverage of the film. Taylor concedes there were "some decent reviews," but much of the language from critics was "sneering and superficial."

"I think people know a lot more than film critics, and the word of mouth via social media is so much more powerful than review from a guy who probably watches 40 movies a week, and has probably lost the essence of the joy of a movie," he added.

Queen + Adam Lambert recently wrapped up the North American leg of their 'Rhapsody' tour. The band is set to get back on the road together next spring.
